PANDORA

THE FIRST HUMAN WOMAN and THE SOURCE OF ALL EVIL

After overthrowing the Titans, Zeus asked Hephaestus to create a human woman out of the soil. She was modeled after Aphrodite and given life by the Four Winds. All the Olympians showered her with special godly gifts, including beauty (Aphrodite), cunning (Hermes), gardening skills (Demeter), musical abilities (Apollo), and curiosity (Hera).

Hermes delivered the woman to earth, where she was to become the wife of Epimetheus, the brother of Prometheus. Upon delivery, Hermes gave Pandora a box as a wedding gift. Unlike most wedding gifts, it came with a condition: She must never, ever open it.

She settled into life with Epimetheus. But remember how Hera gave her the gift of curiosity? Pandora could not stop thinking about that box and what was inside it. After a long internal struggle, she eventually opened it—only to discover that, as the flip side of all those wonderful gifts, the gods had packed various calamities into the box. It contained sickness, insanity, vice, crime, death, jealousy, and other sorrows, and they all flew out into the universe before Pandora could close the box. By the time Pandora got the lid back on, only one thing was trapped inside: hope.
